SANDAKAN: The Chairman of Sandakan Lorry Association (SLA), Steven Chua Pui Min, reminded all transportation companies operating vehicles weighing six tons and above to comply with existing road restrictions concerning heavy vehicles.

His statement follows a recent incident where a lorry broke down along Cecily Road en route to Bandar Nam Tung, drawing public attention through a Facebook post.

Chua clarified that the Public Works Department (JKR) had installed signage prohibiting or limiting the use of certain roads by heavy vehicles, including the winding stretches of Cecily Road.

“Drivers must be aware of road limitations and avoid taking unnecessary risks.

“Cecily Road is not designed for heavy lorries, and ignoring these restrictions endangers all road users.” he said.

He added that the association had consistently reminded both drivers and vehicle owners to act responsibly and abide by traffic laws.

Violations may result in legal action, with no room for compromise, especially when public safety is at stake.

While acknowledging that some offending lorries may not be affiliated with the association, Chua emphasised the group’s commitment to public safety.

“Regardless of membership, the public will hold us accountable when accidents happen. That’s why we continue to spread awareness to all lorry operators,” he added.

Chua urged all transport company owners to take greater responsibility for their drivers’ conduct and to ensure regular reminders are given to promote safe and lawful road usage.
