Tasik Timah Tasoh, a well-known scenic spot in Perlis is now facing a serious issue from the distration of fish species that are harming the ecosystem. The river is an exceptional spot and bass for peacock, as well as its calm water, breathtaking scenary, and popular spot for fishing.

According to News Straits Times, ever since its introduction few years ago which came from Amazon, it has swiftly expanded. The species is a fierce attacker that hunt on local fish like tilapia, baung, and lampan.

Local fishermans expressed their concerns that fishes are now hard to find, which out-comed in an decrement on their income.

There are damages caused by other exotic fishes, such as “bandaraya” catfish, and armored catfish. Through the surface of lakes and revers, these fishes has destroyed the soil, which increases the risk of collapse and erosion.

This have caused a risk of jeopardising the surrounding infrastructure such as road as well as environment. In addition, causing the local species to little to no chances of surviving in some places, which was terrorised by 90% non-native fishes.

This problem doesn’t only affect nature; it affects people too. If the lake’s ecosystem is ruined, there could be fewer tourists, fewer fish to catch, and a loss of income for local communities. Tasik Timah Tasoh could lose its reputation as a peaceful getaway and become a damaged, struggling habitat.

Thankfully, some efforts are being made. In places like Selangor, people receive RM1 for every invasive catfish they catch. The Department of Fisheries is also working to protect native fish and raise awareness.

There are extra cautious actions to be taken. Locals and visitors must avoid releasing fish into lakes and support rules that protect native species.

If we act now, we can still save Tasik Timah Tasoh and keep its waters clean, balanced, and full of life for future generations.
