Travelling to Russia? This Guide is for You!

If you are interested in travelling to Russia, this article is for you.

Can We Go to Russia?

Since the war broke out between Russia and Ukraine, Russia has become one of the most heavily sanctioned countries in the world. Many flights have ceased operations to Russia. But, as Malaysians, can we still travel to Russia?

“Yes, we can!”

Since last August, Russia has resumed e-visa applications for 55 countries with a simplified process. This means that we can apply for everything online. Once approved, the e-visa remains valid for 60 days, allowing you to enter and stay in Russia for up to 16 days.

How to Fly There?

There are actually a few ongoing flights to Russia from airlines such as Emirates, Turkish Airlines, and China Airlines. This is possible because most countries, especially China and all Middle Eastern countries, are still maintaining diplomatic relations with Russia.

Some flight-searching platforms, like Skyscanner, might not be able to check all flights flying in and out of Russia due to Western sanctions. However, you can search and compare the most affordable flight tickets on Trip.com, which offers competitive prices for all flight tickets. Another method is to search for flight tickets directly on the airlines' websites.

Recommended Flights to Moscow, Russia

Here are the 3 most reliable flights that I recommend if you are keen to fly to Moscow, Russia from Kuala Lumpur:

  1. China Airlines - Opt for this airline with a stopover in Beijing. Sometimes, it offers cheaper tickets due to seasonal promotions.
  2. Emirates - The comfort of Emirates is much better! It also provides seasonal promotions to many cities in Europe, including Moscow. You'll need to transit in Dubai and take another flight to Moscow.
  3. Turkish Airlines - Among the very few airlines, Turkish Airlines has the most frequent flight routes to Moscow from Istanbul, despite ongoing sanctions.

Many airlines from China, Turkey, and the UAE are offering direct flights to major cities in Russia in 2024.

Final Thoughts

What do you think about traveling to Russia? Despite the challenges posed by international sanctions, there are still viable ways to visit this fascinating country. The e-visa process simplification and the availability of flights via certain airlines make Russia accessible for those willing to explore its rich cultural heritage and stunning landscapes.
