Kota Kinabalu: The Sepanggar Naval Base here received a port visit from Canadian Ship (HMCS) Ottawa, here, Wednesday. It will be docked at the base until Oct 14.
The visit marks the first time a Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) ship has visited East Malaysia and highlights the long-standing defence cooperation between both countries.
The ship with 250 sailors, soldiers and aviators led by Commanding Officer Commander Sam Patchell, sailed into the base at about 9am.
During the visit, the RCN will meet with Royal Malaysia Navy counterparts and stakeholders to promote collaboration and friendship between both countries, including an on-board reception, ship tours, a friendly football match and community outreach.

Also present was High Commissioner of Canada to Malaysia Wayne Robson who said the visit of HMCS Ottawa to Malaysia is a significant milestone that underscores the enduring relationship between Canada and Malaysia.
Canada and Malaysia celebrated 65 years of official diplomatic relations in 2022.
Canada has trained over 1,000 Malaysian first responders in how to respond safely to various threats, security incidents and attacks.
Canada has also contributed to equipment to Malaysian security partners, including two rigid hull fender boats which were delivered to the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency in 2014.
Members of the Malaysian Armed forces have benefitted from Canada’s Military Training Cooperation Program since 1966.
More than 500 officers have received training in areas including language courses, peace support operations and military professional development.
