Cape Verde declares two days of mourning after 25 killed in bus crash

  • At least 25 people, mostly teenagers and students, have been killed after a passenger bus plunged 30 metres into a steep ravine on Fogo Island in Cape Verde.
  • The fatal accident occurred late on Saturday evening whilst travelling along the mountainous Campanas de Cima route.
  • Education officials confirmed the outing was an annual trip privately arranged by the driver, who was also killed, rather than an officially organised school excursion.
  • Cape Verdean President José Maria Pereira Neves declared two days of national mourning following what he described as a great catastrophe.
  • Mass funerals have taken place on the island for the victims, while several injured passengers continue to receive treatment at a regional hospital as authorities investigate the cause.
