Capiz coop gets fishing supplies store

ROXAS CITY, Capiz — A cooperative in Barangay Binaobawan, Pilar is the recipient of a P1-million fishing supplies and general merchandise store, answering the long-standing call of local fisherfolk for a more accessible and affordable source of necessities to support their livelihood.

The Binaobawan Fisherfolk Association (BFA) is now tasked to sustain the operations of the store.

The project is part of the Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP) of the Capiz provincial government through the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist to provide additional livelihood opportunities and support to fisherfolk and farmers throughout the province.

It complements the objectives under Executive Order (EO) 110 that stipulates a whole-of-government approach to assist sectors that are affected by the effects of the Middle East conflict. The EO also declares a national energy emergency.

The store is expected to make it easier for association members to purchase fishing supplies while providing essential food items for residents in the area.

“I am happy because today, your provincial government is able to serve you,” said Capiz Gov. Fredenil Castro during the inauguration of the store.

Aside from fishing supplies stores, the provincial government has established a gasoline station and water refilling stations, and provided fishing boats, among others, for the coastal villages in Capiz.

For farmer’s associations, various livelihood projects like sari-sari and agriculture as well as veterinary supplies stores, and multipurpose sheds were also provided by the provincial government under the SLP.

BFA president Fernand Caldea said the project is a significant help to the community as it will reduce both the cost and time spent by fisherfolk in buying fishing equipment outside their barangay and municipality.
