Taiping has been hit by a flash flood.
Following a continuous downpour, residents in Taiping, Perak, now have to brace through deep waters as the cars in their homes are almost submerged.
Flash floods have hit several places in Perak
Videos and photos of the flash flood that hit multiple areas in Perak circulated on social media, with the disaster starting late evening yesterday (23 October).
Unfortunately, the flood situation in Perak continues to worsen when a total of 1,931 residents in Larut, Matang, Selam and Manjung have been evacuated to 23 Temporary Evacuation Centres (PPS) as of 4 AM today (24 October).
The image of a man carrying an infant by his chest as he navigated through the flood also went viral on social media. In Manjung alone, approximately 378 affected residents from 115 families were placed in 3 PPS.
Water levels are nearing the danger zone
The Perak State Disaster Management Committee Secretariat informed that the PPS was activated in stages to accommodate the increase in water levels and the number of affected residents.
In Manjung, flood victims were also accommodated at Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Batu, Pantai Remis, and Sekolah Agama Rakyat Padang Serai, with rescue and assistance operations being carried out by the Civil Defence Force (APM), Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), and JKM.
The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has since issued a warning of thunderstorms and continuous rain in several areas of the state, while water levels in Sungai Kurau and Sungai Kerian are reported to be close to the danger zone.
In the latest report by Berita Harian, as of 8 AM today, a total of 2,171 flood victims from 759 families are still being accommodated at PPS.
The Taiping Rest and Treat (R&R) area northbound on the North-South Expressway (PLUS) is temporarily closed due to continuous rain, which has caused water to stagnate in the area. PLUS Malaysia Berhad (PLUS), in a statement on its official X account, announced that the closure was necessary to ensure the safety of all highway users.
