Shahkot police have booked six manufacturers of illegally modified motorcycle-driven ‘jugad rehris’ operating on roads in the region for violating government orders.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sarwan Singh Ball said the accused have been identified as Mandeep Singh Manna, a resident of Bahmannia village, Manwindarjit Singh resident of Model Town Shahkot ,Rajindar Singh alias Jindar resident of Khiva village near Nakodar , Kewal Singh resident of Killi village and Harbhajan Singh alias Jagga resident of Madipura village in Ludhiana ,Satnam Singh alias Sanni resident of Hartipur village near Mehatpur.
DSP said that the accused were manufacturing modified motorcycle-driven ‘jugad rehris’ and were selling these and violating orders of Punjab Transport Department and Special Director General of Police Traffic Road Safety Punjab which have banned manufacturing of these vehicles,
DSP told that cases under sections 223-B(disobedience to an order duly promulgated by a public servant) of the BNS have been registered against the accused in Shahkot and Mehatpur police stations and further investigations are on.
DSP said that during recent checking drives, police intercepted several ‘jugad’ vehicles being used for transporting goods and passengers in violation of transport and road safety norms. DSP said these makeshift vehicles, often fabricated by attaching ‘rehris’ or carts to motorcycles, are not authorised under motor vehicle regulations and pose danger to commuters due to lack of registration, insurance and safety features.
Interestingly, it was in one of these ‘jugad rehris’ that now MP Amritpal Singh had initially escaped from the hands of the police in Shahkot area during a month-long chase in March 2023.
