LABUAN: A cafe operator was compounded for using an uncertified digital weighing scale for trade during an enforcement operation by the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN).
Labuan KPDN Director Amiludin Malang said the offence was committed under the Weights and Measures Act 1972.
He said two enforcement teams inspected business premises around Labuan town to ensure compliance with laws enforced by the ministry.
The inspections covered supermarkets, grocery shops, restaurants, cafes and other commercial premises.
The operation focused on price display compliance, the use of weighing and measuring instruments for trade, and enforcement under the Control of Supplies Act 1961 through Ops Tiris 4.0.
Inspectors found the digital scale was used to determine the weight of food sold by the gram as advertised on the cafe’s menu, making it subject to certification under the Weights and Measures Act 1972.
Amiludin said those convicted of using uncertified weighing equipment for trade face a fine of up to RM10,000, imprisonment of up to one year, or both.
He said Labuan KPDN would continue enforcement and advocacy programmes to ensure traders complied with the law and urged businesses to verify their weighing equipment before using it for commercial transactions.
