MANILA, Philippines — Senate Minority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano on Thursday said political alliances may change, but the minority bloc’s principles and commitment to the Filipino people would remain steadfast.
Cayetano made the statement following Sen. Mark Villar’s move to the Senate majority and his election to the Commission on Appointments and the Senate Committee on Public Works.
“Senate coalitions may change, but our vision, principles, and commitment to GOD and to the Filipino people remain steadfast,” Cayetano said in a statement posted on his social media.
He said the Senate minority would continue to serve as a fiscalizer and constructive opposition, while defending the rights of Filipinos in accordance with the Constitution and other laws.
“The Senate Minority will continue to fulfill its responsibilities as fiscalizers and constructive oppositionists, upholding the rights of every Filipino in accordance with GOD’s laws and the laws of man, particularly the Philippine Constitution,” he said.
Cayetano acknowledged that political considerations could lead lawmakers to realign themselves, saying it had become increasingly clear since the May 11 elections that the administration needed a closely allied working majority in the Senate.
“We understand all too well the circumstances and considerations that lead to changes in political alliances,” Cayetano said.
“But regardless of how the political landscape shifts, our duty remains unchanged. We will continue to stand for what is right, uphold our institutions, and work for the good of our nation,” he added.
Cayetano also wished Villar and other senators well as political alignments in the chamber continue to evolve.
“As we continue to pray for our country, we wish Senator Mark Villar and all our colleagues well,” he said.
“May GOD grant us all the wisdom, humility, and strength to faithfully serve HIM and the Filipino people,” Cayetano added.
