
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday, in coordination with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), successfully secured the extradition of Red Notice subject Abhay alias Abhay Rana from Portugal to India.
Rana was wanted by police in a number of criminal cases registered in Haryana, involving offences such as extortion, criminal intimidation, operation of an organised crime syndicate, attempt to murder and issuance of life threats.
In the concerned case registered in Karnal, Haryana, investigation revealed that Rana along with his associates, used to threaten local businessmen through social media platforms, including WhatsApp calls, for payment of ransom.
Those who failed to comply with the demands were assaulted by members of the syndicate.
After the completion of investigation, a chargesheet has been filed against him before the competent court in the concerned case.
At the request of the Haryana Police, NCB-New Delhi got a Red Notice published against Rana through INTERPOL channels. After he was geo-located and arrested by the Portuguese authorities, an extradition request was submitted to them.
Following due legal process, the Portuguese authorities granted Rana’s extradition to India.
The escort team of Haryana Police visited Portugal where the accused was handed over.
More than 160 wanted criminals have been successfully brought back to India in the last few years through coordination via INTERPOL channels, official sources said.
