Melody Johnson, a 39-year-old woman, was arrested on 18 July after her husband provided police with a video allegedly showing her pouring a cleaning product into his coffee machine.
The couple, who are going through a divorce but still lived together with their child, first noticed a strange taste in the husband's coffee back in March when they were stationed in Germany. It wasn't until two or three weeks later that the husband decided to use chemical testing strips to test the water in his tap, which came back normal. However, when he tested the water in his coffee pot, it revealed high levels of chlorine.
In May, the husband set up a camera in their home and captured footage of Johnson pouring something into his coffee pot. He decided not to report it in Germany and instead continued pretending to drink the coffee until they moved back to America in June. Once temporarily stationed at a hotel in Tucson, Arizona, the husband installed another camera, which allegedly caught Johnson tampering with his coffee maker.
He reported the incident to the police the following day, but they were unsure of what exactly Johnson had been pouring into the coffee pot. After moving to a permanent home in July, the husband placed additional cameras around the house, including one in the laundry room where bleach was stored, one directly above the coffee machine, and another positioned to capture movement between the two areas.
The husband collected multiple videos showing Johnson taking bleach, pouring it into a container, and subsequently pouring it into the coffee maker. With this evidence, he went back to the police and expressed his belief that Johnson was attempting to kill him to collect death benefits. Following the husband's report, Johnson was arrested and charged with attempted first-degree homicide, attempted aggravated assault, and adding poison to food or drink.
A search of the home allegedly uncovered a container in Johnson's bedroom under her bathroom sink that emitted a bleach-like smell and contained liquid. Additionally, the coffee maker was found to have a liquid that resembled bleach. Johnson now faces serious legal consequences for her alleged actions.
