KUALA LUMPUR – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim confirmed today that Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to a ceasefire and will begin withdrawing their troops from the border.
Anwar explained that while both nations had agreed to the ceasefire, they had requested additional time for the pullback, as their forces were already stationed at the border, Bernama reported.
"Yesterday, I had a phone conversation with the acting Prime Minister of Thailand and the Prime Minister of Cambodia, because of Malaysia’s position and their respect for us," he said.
"I’m grateful because when I spoke with them, both responded respectfully. Why? Because Malaysia is a peaceful and stable country."
The Prime Minister's comments came during his speech at the 2025 Anti-Drug Day Celebration in Jitra.
Earlier reports from Bernama highlighted that Anwar welcomed the positive signals from Bangkok and Phnom Penh, which showed their willingness to consider a ceasefire to prevent further conflict.
On Thursday evening, Anwar had contacted Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai to express Malaysia's concerns about the escalating tensions between the two countries.
In a related development, Hun Manet expressed support for Anwar's proposal for a ceasefire with Thailand, which later withdrew its initial backing of the plan.
The two Southeast Asian nations are engaged in their heaviest fighting in over a decade, and Malaysia, under Anwar's leadership as ASEAN Chair, is actively seeking to resolve the conflict.
"The key to resolving the current armed conflict between Thailand and Cambodia is the genuine willingness of the Thai side to accept a ceasefire," Hun Manet said in a Facebook post.
Tensions had been rising since May 28, when a deadly incident in the Preah Vihear area resulted in the death of a Cambodian soldier.
The dispute, centred around the 817-kilometre border that remains undemarcated, has been a longstanding source of friction between the two Southeast Asian nations.
Despite the recent clashes, Anwar's diplomatic intervention has sparked hope for de-escalation and a return to peace in the region. - July 25, 2025
