Tensions between Iran and Israel escalated once again after Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz directed the military to launch fresh attacks on Tehran, citing a breach of the ceasefire agreement announced just hours earlier by U.S. President Donald Trump.

The decision to resume military operations followed claims by Israel that Iran had launched missiles towards its territory, defying the ceasefire which was supposed to take effect earlier that day. Katz justified the renewed offensive by stating that Iran’s alleged missile launches represented a clear violation of the ceasefire and warranted continued high-intensity operations targeting Iranian regime facilities and what Israel considers terror-linked infrastructure in Tehran.

However, Iran's ISNA student news agency quickly rejected these accusations, insisting that no missiles had been fired after the ceasefire deadline and labelling the claims as baseless.

The fragile truce, which was intended to bring an end to nearly two weeks of intense conflict, now appears to be hanging by a thread. The war, which began on June 13 with Israel’s surprise strike on Iranian nuclear and missile installations, had seen rapid escalation and international concern.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had earlier expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the offensive, asserting that Israel had accomplished its primary objectives: to severely impair Iran’s nuclear ambitions and missile capabilities. Netanyahu also extended gratitude to the United States for its direct support, particularly its strategic bombing of Iranian nuclear sites in recent days.

On the Iranian side, Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi had signalled conditional compliance with the ceasefire, stating that retaliatory measures would cease if Israel halted its attacks by 4 a.m. Tehran time.

News of the ceasefire had prompted an immediate response in global financial markets. Investors welcomed the announcement, with stock markets climbing and oil prices dipping amid optimism that the conflict might be winding down. However, the latest developments have rekindled uncertainty.

As both nations remain firm in their narratives and military stances, hopes for lasting de-escalation are quickly fading. The international community continues to monitor the volatile situation, wary that any further provocation could derail diplomatic efforts and prolong instability in the region.
