A state convention organised by the Communist Party of India (CPI) was held at Virsa Vihar here on Thursday to raise issues related to Punjab and rising inflation. Addressing the gathering, CPI state secretary Nirmal Singh Dhaliwal alleged that the Centre was doing injustice to Punjab over the distribution of river waters by misusing Sections 68, 69 and 70 of the Punjab Reorganisation Act instead of following the riparian principle under international law.
Dhaliwal also criticised the move to end Punjab’s representation in the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB), delay in handing over Chandigarh to Punjab, and alleged attempts to weaken Punjab’s rights over Panjab University.
Dhaliwal further said that the recent hike in diesel, petrol and cooking gas prices had increased the financial burden on common people. He said rising fuel prices had also increased the cost of essential commodities and farm inputs, making agriculture unprofitable for farmers.
