KUALA LUMPUR – Certain DAP leaders are deliberately provoking Umno into quitting its alliance in the unity government, alleged Datuk Mohd Puad Zarkashi today.
Taking to Facebook, Umno Supreme Council member said the party should not fall for DAP's "tricks".
"Certain DAP leaders are looking for ways (to make) Umno quit the Madani government. That is why they are making provocations on sensitive matters to push Umno to 'pull the plug'.
"They sees Umno's presence in the Cabinet as troublesome. This is a big hurdle to their goal to make Malaysia a liberal country. These leaders wants Umno to quit (the government) on its own accord, so that DAP is not seen as 'evil'," said Puad.
According to him, the leaders, whom he did not name, are not concerned about the Madani government's collapse if Umno withdraws its support.
Puad's remarks come in the wake of the outrage by senior Umno leaders' outrage at their DAP counterparts following comments made by the latter about Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s unsuccessful attempt to secure house arrest in the SRC International case.
The controversy erupted after Puchong MP Yeo Bee Yin posted a comment on social media, saying: “Another reason to celebrate this year”.
Former DAP MP Tony Pua also took to social media, saying "lovers of a crook" (Najib's supporters) should not stop others from celebrating the verdict.
Widespread backlash
The comments garnered backlash widespread from Umno leaders - fuelling growing speculation that the party might withdraw its support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi posted a cautionary message on Facebook: “Jangan menyimbah minyak pada api yang sedang marak” (“Don’t pour oil on an already raging fire”).
Other senior leaders also commented, with Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr. Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki deeming Yeo’s statement as “amat kurang ajar, melampau dan langsung tidak berperikemanusian” (“extremely rude, excessive, and utterly inhumane”), and Barisan Nasional secretary-general Datuk Seri Dr. Zambry Abdul Kadir reminding Yeo to not rejoice in the suffering of others.
Commenting on this, Puad said that it is highly unlikely that Yeo and Pua would apologise for their respective remarks.
"To them, the sooner Umno quits the better. Amanah is too small to fight for the Malay Rulers. Umno should not fall for their (DAP's) tricks."
Earlier, Justice Alice Loke Yee Ching of the Kuala Lumpur High Court rejected Najib’s judicial review application concerning the “titah adendum,” which was alleged to allow him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest.
The court ordered the former Prime Minister to continue serving his sentence in Kajang Prison. His lawyer, Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, confirmed that Najib was disappointed with the decision and would explore further legal options.– December 25, 2025
