CFO backs stronger action vs poverty

THE Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) supported inter-agency efforts to strengthen national poverty reduction policies.

The CFO, in a statement on Saturday, said government and basic-sector representatives adopted five key measures for endorsement to the National Anti-Poverty Commission (NAPC) executive committee.

The CFO said it “continues to strengthen coordination with government partners on policies and programs that affect Filipinos overseas and their families.” CFO representatives recently took part in the NAPC Technical Action Officers — Technical Working Group meeting in Quezon City, which brought together over 25 representatives from government agencies and basic sectors.

Among the measures adopted were the National Anti-Poverty Action Agenda; NAPC’s “Knockout ang Kahirapan” advocacy banner and “Masaganang Pamumuhay sa Bagong Pilipinas” flagship program.

The participants also adopted the proposed directives to align agency initiatives with the Magna Carta of the Poor; efforts to expedite local poverty reduction action plans toward completion of the National Poverty Reduction Plan; and a proposed executive measure designating Landbank as administrator of the People’s Development Trust Fund.

They also discussed policy priorities affecting basic sectors, including accessible public transportation for persons with disabilities, housing for fisherfolk, universal pension for senior citizens, and proposed legislative measures on climate action and poverty alleviation.

The meeting was presided over by NAPC Deputy Director General Esnaen Catong on behalf of NAPC lead convenor Manny Pacquiao.

Pacquiao, in a video message, raised the importance of collaboration and sustained policy engagement in addressing poverty.
