The UT Administration has revised the reservation policy for OBC admissions to the technical and higher educational institutions in the city. While 85% seats fall under the UT pool, the remaining 15% come under the All-India pool.

“It has been decided to implement the revised horizontal-cum-vertical reservation policy for the academic session 2026-27 as per the instructions issued by the Centre, UT Administration and Panjab University from time to time for all the higher/technical institutions,” read an order issued by the Technical Education Department.

Under the UT Pool (85%), the vertical main categories will be Scheduled Caste (SC), which will carry 15% reservation, and the Other Backward Class (OBC) of (Non-Creamy Layer), which will have 3% reservation for the session 2026-27 and increased every year in a phased manner up to 27% by 2031-32. For the Economically Weaker Section (EWS), 10% of the total seats are reserved.

Sub-categories, namely ‘Defence’, ‘Freedom Fighter’, ‘Person with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD)’ and ‘Sports’, will be available horizontally under each main category (General, SC, OBC and EWS). Defence category will carry 5% of the total seats in each main category, Freedom Fighter (children and grandchildren of freedom fighter) 3%; PwBDs 5% and Sports quota 2%.

For Reservation Policy outside UT Pool (15%), the vertical main categories will be reserved at 15% for SC, 7.5% for Scheduled Tribe, 27% for OBC and 10% for the Economically Weaker Section (EWS). “Under sub-categories, 5% reservation is for Defence category, 2% for Freedom Fighter and 5% for PwBD,” read the order.
