After the Centre notified the extension of the Assam Tenancy Act, 2021 to Chandigarh, the District Bar Association (DBA) on Friday decided to abstain from work until May 13 in protest against the new law.

The decision was taken during a general house meeting called to discuss the recourse to be taken against the newly notified act.

DBA President Ashok Chauhan said that during the meeting, a five-member committee was formed to file a writ petition before the Punjab and Haryana High Court challenging the move.

DBA Chandigarh Vice-President Sandeep Gujjar said that although the National Lok Adalat is scheduled for Saturday, the association has decided to boycott it as part of the protest.

The association further announced that no matters, including traffic challans, will be taken up during the strike period. All members, including notaries and oath commissioners, have been directed to participate in the protest, failing which penalties approved during the meeting will be imposed.

It was also decided that any member who appears before the court or sends his/her intern during the strike period shall be liable to pay a fine of Rs 2,000.

To determine the future course of action, the association has scheduled another meeting on May 13 at 11 am.
