Acting on the directions of Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria, employees of various departments of the Chandigarh Administration, Municipal Corporation and other government offices travelled to work by public transport on Wednesday, leaving their personal vehicles at home.

Many employees living near their offices chose to walk or cycle.

In line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for austerity and reduced fuel consumption, the Governor urged officials to avoid using four-wheelers every Wednesday. He encouraged them to opt for alternative modes of transport such as public transport, cycling, walking or carpooling.

The Chandigarh Administration also arranged special transport services for government employees, deploying buses from different sectors to office locations.

Chabi Lal, an employee of the Engineering Wing, said he walked to his office from Sector 27.

Another Municipal Corporation employee, Vikas, praised the initiative, saying it would benefit both personal health and the country’s economy.

Gagan, another employee, said he travelled from Kurali to his office using public transport.
