The Chandigarh Police have filed a chargesheet against Dr Parminder Singh of Landmark Hospital, Sector 33, in connection with the death of an elderly woman named Amarjit Kaur, allegedly due to medical negligence.
The charge-sheet has been filed under Section 304 (A) of the IPC. The doctor was accused of professional negligence during treatment and failing to provide critical medical records after the patient’s condition worsened when she was undergoing treatment at a government hospital.
Chandigarh Police registered a case against Dr Parminder and others from Landmark Hospital on December 18, 2024, on the complaint of Sukhwinder, son of the woman. He alleged that his mother suffered a fractured femur on March 16, 2024, and underwent surgery at the hospital. However, her condition deteriorated a week after the operation. Despite her sodium levels falling drastically, the hospital management did not re-admit her when she returned.
He alleged that they merely prescribed some medicine and sent her back home. The very next day, Amarjit’s health worsened. Following this, she was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of a government hospital. Despite conducting all necessary tests and administering medications, her seizures could not be controlled. The government hospital doctors then advised an urgent MRI scan, but the scan could not be performed.
He alleged that the hospital did not specify whether the surgical implant placed in her body was MRI-compatible. The hospital failed to give to provide the certificate even when the family visited the hospital in person. Due to the lack of this certificate, the MRI could not take place, and Amarjit passed away on April 16, 2024. Based on the report of the medical negligence committee, and the opinion of the PGI doctors, the police filed the charge-sheet. The police have listed 21 persons as witnesses in the charge-sheet.
