In a bold call for action, former Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin has urged Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to address the perceived drift in the government by executing a comprehensive Cabinet reshuffle. Khairy emphasized the necessity of eliminating ineffective members and appointing a technically competent second finance minister to spearhead crucial reforms.

Writing in an article on the Singaporean portal Fulcrum, Khairy asserted that Anwar must swiftly address the challenges faced by the government by shedding underperforming Cabinet members and focusing on substantive, rather than performative, leadership.

Highlighting a key unfulfilled promise, Khairy pointed out Anwar's failure to separate the roles of prime minister and finance minister—a commitment Anwar championed vigorously while in the opposition. He stressed the urgency of rectifying this situation to ensure accountability and effective governance.

"Anwar must quickly arrest the drift and course correct by dropping deadwood in Cabinet, appointing a technically competent second minister of finance to drive tough reforms," Khairy emphasized, signaling the need for a decisive move away from minutiae and a focus on impactful reforms.

Khairy acknowledged the challenges inherited by Anwar, including economic issues and global slowdowns. However, he questioned the viability of populist measures such as maintaining subsidies and canceling student loans, suggesting that these promises made in the opposition might not be feasible in the current governance landscape.

While recognizing Anwar's unexpected coalition government that included former adversaries like Umno, Khairy criticized the lack of significant change and reform. He pointed to Anwar's tendency to pander to Muslim conservatives, backtrack on promised reforms, navigate corruption charges against his deputy, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, and downplay the LCS scandal.

"The maestro has also lost his orchestra… his Cabinet has largely been lackluster. One year of underperformance, however, has forced him to admit he needs to shuffle the deck," Khairy remarked, highlighting the need for a strategic recalibration in leadership.

Khairy also criticized the unequal funding provided to opposition Members of Parliament (MP), noting a departure from Anwar's earlier advocacy for equal funding while in the opposition. This observation underlines the need for consistency and fairness in governance, irrespective of political affiliations.

In conclusion, Khairy's call for a comprehensive Cabinet reshuffle and a renewed focus on substantive leadership underscores the pressing need for a course correction in Anwar's administration. As the government grapples with challenges, the effectiveness of these proposed reforms may shape the trajectory of Malaysia's governance and political landscape.
