Sultan of Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah has put forth a proposal aimed at enhancing the efficiency and coherence of syariah laws within the state. His Majesty suggested the establishment of a Syariah Supreme Court, envisioning a consolidated framework to streamline the application and interpretation of Islamic laws.
Highlighting the current structure of syariah laws in Pahang, His Royal Highness emphasized the existence of three tiers: the Syariah Lower Court, the Syariah High Court, and the Syariah Appeals Court. These legal foundations, rooted in the historical legacy of Pahang's Islamic governance, have undergone continual refinement and improvement over time.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the International Conference on Contemporary Education in the Islamic World (ICCEIW), Sultan Abdullah underscored the significance of these proposed reforms in bolstering the state's legal framework. His Majesty's remarks, translated into Arabic by Pahang State Executive Councillor for Islamic Affairs, Datuk Seri Syed Ibrahim Syed Ahmad, underscored the gravity of the proposal.
The Sultan's proposal has been formally submitted to the state government and the Pahang Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (MUIP) for further deliberation and action. This strategic move reflects a commitment to fostering legal innovation and adapting to contemporary challenges within the realm of Islamic jurisprudence.
The ICCEIW, organized for the first time through collaborative efforts between the Pahang government, Sultan Ahmad Shah Islamic University of Pahang (UnIPSAS), the Pahang Foundation, MUIP, and the World Association of Islamic Universities (Rabitah al-Jamiat al-Islamiyyah), served as a platform for robust scholarly discourse. Over three days, the conference convened 300 participants from 22 countries, including Indonesia, Brazil, Syria, India, Libya, Tunisia, Canada, and Saudi Arabia.
The presence of esteemed figures such as the Rector of Al-Azhar University, Prof Dr Salamah Daud, further underscored the significance of the conference in advancing scholarly dialogue and knowledge exchange. With a focus on education as a catalyst for societal advancement, the ICCEIW aimed to provide fresh perspectives and insights into various facets of educational development within the Islamic world.
As Pahang continues its journey towards legal modernization and institutional excellence, Sultan Abdullah's visionary proposal marks a pivotal step towards ensuring the continued relevance and effectiveness of syariah laws within the state. Through collaborative efforts and scholarly engagement, Pahang seeks to uphold its esteemed legacy while embracing the imperatives of progress and innovation in the realm of Islamic jurisprudence.
