A tragic incident unfolded in Thailand on 30 Jul 2023 as an explosion tore through a firework warehouse, resulting in the deaths of at least 10 individuals and leaving over 100 injured. According to a senior official who spoke with AFP, the blast occurred in the town of Sungai Kolok, located in the southern province of Narathiwat. Initial investigations suggest that the explosion was triggered by welding activities conducted during the building's construction.

Narathiwat governor Sanan Pongaksorn informed AFP that the warehouse, which stored firecrackers, exploded on that fateful afternoon. The latest figures indicate that nine people lost their lives, while another 115 sustained injuries. Governor Pongaksorn further added that the fire is now under control. As the building was still being constructed, preliminary findings suggest that a technical error during the steel welding process may have caused the incident.

Eyewitness accounts of the devastation provide a glimpse into the chaos that ensued. One resident described the moment, saying, "Then I saw my roof was wide open. I looked outside and I saw houses collapsing and people lying on the ground everywhere. It was chaos." A video captured by Seksan portrays scenes of disorder at a local market, with bewildered locals wandering amidst the aftermath and emergency services rushing to aid those affected.

The impact of the explosion left behind a trail of destruction, with broken glass, roof tiles, and other debris scattered across the area. Prompt response from fire engines helped to extinguish the blaze, while rescue workers continue to comb through the wreckage in search of survivors. The victims have been swiftly transported to nearby hospitals for medical treatment. Disturbingly, local media reports indicated that the fire and explosions persisted, leading to fears that numerous individuals might still be trapped under the rubble.

In light of the tragic incident, caretaker Prime Minister Prayut Chan-O-Cha has called upon relevant agencies to provide immediate assistance to the victims and those impacted by the explosion. Government deputy spokeswoman Ratchada Thanadirek relayed the prime minister's plea for aid. The priority now lies in offering support to the affected individuals and initiating efforts to mitigate the consequences of this dreadful event.
