He instead chose to head to talk with South Africa's Rugby World Cup winning captain Siya Kolisi.
The Standard suggests that James wanted to learn about Kolisi's early life and career struggles.
He also wanted to gain tips on being a leader of a team with so much expectation around it.
James was named Chelsea captain by boss Mauricio Pochettino over the summer.
