The left-back is one who the club attempted to sell during the summer transfer window.
After Maatsen decided to stay, instead of moving to Burnley, he is now one who the club wants to retain.
Per Fabrizio Romano, with Maatsen only having a year left on his contract, Chelsea are seeking a renewal.
The club want to ensure the 21-year-old cannot move on for free in the summer.
However, Maatsen may have little incentive to renew, especially if he is not a regular first team player under Mauricio Pochettino this season.
