Chelsea U21 coach Mark Robinson with their 4-1 win over Dinamo Zagreb in the Premier League International Cup.
Billy Gee, Ronnie Stutter, Tyrique George and an own goal saw Chelsea to victory.
Robinson told the club's website: "I was pleased that the lads got the win as it would be a really good competition to progress in, giving some of the younger players a different experience. I was not pleased we conceded and how the first 15 minutes of the second half went.
"We spoke about there being a reaction from them, as following our first-half performance, we were in complete control. We rode our luck a bit at the beginning of the second half, after an impressive first half. We did gain more control again and created a lot of chances, but the game become far too transitional.
"We have great forwards across the Academy this season and, as we are a development squad, you look at the players at your disposal and do everything to play a formation that can develop the players but also be competitive."
He continued: "We are fairly pleased with how it has gone, but there always has to be that reality that if the players do not do enough to make the relationships work within that formation, and win games, then you change it.
"This does mean that players then fight for single positions, like they will have to in the next stage of their career. That balance is important."
