A chemical leak at the KLIA Southern Support Zone Aircraft Engineering area has caused at least 20 staff members from Sepang Aircraft, MAS Engineering Hangar, and CAE to suffer from nausea.
In a statement, the Selangor Fire and Rescue Department reported that six individuals were transported to the air disaster unit, 13 were taken to the medical center, and one was sent to Putrajaya Hospital for treatment.
“Among the agencies involved are the police, the Department of Environment (DOE), Aviation Security (AVSEC), the Health Ministry, Airport Fire Rescue Service, and Air Side Safety,” the department stated.
Fire and Rescue Department operations commander Muhammad Nur Khairi Samsumin stated that a distress call was received at 11:23 a.m. In response, six personnel from the KLIA Fire and Rescue Department, along with the Shah Alam Fire and Rescue Department Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) unit, were dispatched to the scene to investigate.
Earlier today (July 4), reports indicated that a Hazmat team was deployed to Sepang following the detection of a chemical leak. The rapid deployment of the Hazmat team underscores the urgency and seriousness of the situation, as well as the need for immediate containment and mitigation efforts.
This incident has highlighted the importance of safety protocols and emergency preparedness in handling hazardous materials within the airport's engineering zones. The quick and coordinated response from multiple agencies underscores the significance of inter-agency cooperation in effectively managing such emergencies. The affected staff members are currently receiving medical treatment, and further investigations are underway to determine the cause of the leak and prevent future occurrences.
The incident has raised concerns about the handling and storage of hazardous chemicals in high-risk areas like airports. It emphasizes the necessity for stringent safety measures and regular training for personnel to ensure they are well-prepared to deal with potential chemical hazards. Moving forward, authorities are expected to review and strengthen safety protocols to enhance the overall safety and well-being of individuals working in these environments.
As investigations continue, the priority remains on ensuring that all safety protocols are rigorously followed to prevent future incidents. The collaboration among various departments and agencies plays a crucial role in maintaining a safe working environment and safeguarding public health and safety.
