KUANTAN authorities are investigating the tragic deaths of five family members at a residence in Taman Cherating Damai after a violent incident early yesterday morning.

A witness, who is the youngest sibling of the suspect, reported hearing a heated argument around 7am while in his bedroom.

“When the witness left his room and looked towards the kitchen, he saw his mother covered in blood, screaming for him to seek help from his uncle who lived behind the same housing area,” said Kuantan District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Ashari Abu Samah.

“The witness then called for his uncle, and upon arrival, all the victims and the suspect were found unconscious and covered in blood.”

The house was home to eight family members, including the 32-year-old suspect, a security guard, his wife Nurul Asshiykin Kamaruzaman, 33, their two young daughters, the suspect’s mother Tuan Kamaria Tuan Puteh, 55, and three younger brothers. At the time of the incident, only six members were present.

Police confirmed that the suspect had no prior criminal record or history of mental health treatment. Initial investigations revealed that he attacked his wife first, followed by his mother and then his two daughters, aged four and two, before fatally injuring himself.

Injuries sustained by the victims were found on their hands, ears, and necks. A 29-centimetre knife was recovered from the scene.

Autopsies on the suspect and his wife were conducted yesterday, while examinations of the mother and two children were scheduled for 9am today.

The shocking incident has left the local community in distress, as authorities continue their investigation to determine the precise sequence of events and the underlying motives behind the tragedy. - February 18, 2026
