Chery Group is preparing to introduce the Freelander brand in Indonesia early 2027 and this product is developed in collaboration with Jaguar Land Rover (JLR). It is Not A ‘TEMU’ product as commented by some British journalist.
Chery Group has yet to confirm an exact launch date or pricing as they prepare the introduction of this iconic nameplate which has gained a lot of bookings in China. In China the launch price starts from RM180k which means it could arrive in our part of the world for around RM350k or less if fully imported.
“We can’t provide the exact time yet, but we will try to bring it to Indonesia next year,” said Zeng Shuo, President Director of Chery Group, in Wuhu, China, on October 19th, 2026.

Pricing has yet to be determined with taxes included and the vehicle supply strategy for the new right hand drive production needs consideration. The choice between importing completely built-up (CBU) vehicles and possible local assembly in Indonesia is also expected to affect the final selling price.
“The CBU scheme and or local assembly in Indonesia will also affect the selling price, so we can’t announce the price yet,” Zeng said. (the same issue will also have to be considered for Malaysia)
Freelander is being developed as a separate brand focused on electrified sport utility vehicles (SUVs), combining British design characteristics with Chinese technology. The brand was reintroduced early 2026 and at its launch it was mentioned that it will operate separately from the Chery and Land Rover product lines within the broader Chery Group (like Omoda and ICaur).
The Freelander 8 moves far beyond the compact footprint of its predecessor, establishing a commanding presence that stretches 736 mm longer than the original first-generation Freelander.
Exterior Dimensions: Measures 5,118 mm in length, 2,050 mm in width, and 1,898 mm in height, riding on an expansive 3,040 mm wheelbase.
Wheel & Tyre Setup: Rides on 21-inch or 22-inch alloy wheels fitted with performance-grade Pirelli P Zero Elect tyres engineered specifically for high-torque electrified vehicles.
Towing & Ground Clearance: Offers a certified towing capacity of up to 2,000 kg and a ground clearance of 220 mm.
Dual-Chamber Air Suspension & Rear-Wheel Steering: Equipped with an active dual-chamber air suspension system that automatically modulates ride height and stiffness. Despite its five-metre-plus length, an active rear-wheel steering system delivers an exceptionally tight turning radius of just 5.15 metres, making parking and urban U-turns effortless.
The brand’s first model is the Freelander 8, a large SUV being developed with different powertrain options, including a fully electric powertrain and range-extender technology. The vehicle is manufactured in China through the Chery-JLR joint venture.
This Freelander is packed to the brim with technology. Every variant receives a roof-mounted 896-line LiDAR sensor paired with Huawei’s Qiankun ADS 5 advanced driver assistance system, while processing duties are handled by Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 8397 chipset. Inside, buyers can also expect a pillar-to-pillar LED display and zero-gravity front seats, although the cabin has yet to be fully revealed.
