Chest pain is a common complaint that I encounter in the clinic. While many cases are not due to serious medical problems, some could still be attributed to medical emergencies like a heart attack. Having a pain in the chest can be worrying, it is crucial to recognize when immediate medical attention is necessary. This article will outline common reasons for chest pain and identifies critical symptoms that demand immediate medical evaluation.

Causes of Chest Pain

While many think of the heart when having a pain in the chest, it is not always the case. Problems in other organ systems like the gut, muscles and lungs can contribute to chest pain. Sometimes it can even be psychological in origin. Here is a list of possible causes:

  • Gastrointestinal Issues: Conditions such as heartburn or indigestion can cause chest pain. Those affected may experience a burning sensation, fullness, bloating and regurgitation of food or acidic fluids, particularly after meals.
  • Musculoskeletal Origin: Pain resulting from a chest sprain or strain may happen after an injury or physical activity. This type of pain may worsen with inhalation but generally improves with rest.
  • Psychological Factors: Anxiety, depression, or panic attacks can manifest as episodes of sharp, continuous pain. These may be accompanied by a rapid heartbeat, sweating and dizziness. They are often triggered by psychological stress.
  • Respiratory Infections: Chest infections (pneumonia) can also induce pain that worsens with inhalation. Those affected often have other symptoms like cough, fever and production of yellow or green sputum.
  • Herpes Zoster (Shingles): Prior to the appearance of a rash, shingles can cause a tingling sensation on the skin. The rash then appears as painful blisters, affecting one side of the body.
  • Heart Conditions: A heart attack constitutes a life-threatening emergency. Typical symptoms include a constricting pain that spreads to the arms, neck and jaw. Those affected may also experience dizziness, sweating, nausea and breathlessness. It is more prevalent in older individuals and those with established risk factors like smoking, obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol and a family history of heart problems.

When to Seek Immediate Medical Attention?

It is imperative to contact emergency services without delay if you or your loved ones experience any of the following symptoms:

  • Sudden, persistent pain or discomfort in your chest. It is typically a squeezing or crushing pain, but it can also be burning in nature and be mistaken as indigestion.
  • Pain that spreads to other parts of the body such as the arms, neck, jaw, stomach or back.
  • Chest pain occurring concurrently with other symptoms like sweating, nausea, dizziness and shortness of breath.

If the chest pain is intermittent or resolves quickly, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider especially if you are still worried.

Conclusion

Chest pain may originate from a myriad of problems, but learning the warning signs of chest pain might just help you save a life one day.
