Chevrolet Camaro Confirmed To Be Axed By January 2024

Special edition Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 will serve as the Camaro swansong

Well, I suppose no one could say this news came completely out of nowhere, but that does not change how much it hurts, especially for us American Muscle and pony car enthusiasts. Yes, the iconic Chevrolet Camaro is leaving us … AGAIN. If you understand that reference, we can be friends.

So on 22 March 2023, American automaker, Chevrolet, officially announced that the popular Camaro sports coupe would be axed come January 2024 but before the car bids us farewell, and is likely not to return this time, the carmaker will honor this iconic car by building a special edition Z/28.

Moreover, this last limited edition Chevrolet Camaro will serve as the swansong to the iconic and popular muscle car that left a mark on many of our lives. Chevrolet has also mentioned that this is not the end for the Camaro nameplate and that the Chevrolet Motorsports will continue to compete globally.

Not much is known about the Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 special edition but for now, we know that the platform the Z/28 will ride on is Chevrolet’s longitudinal-engine Alpha platform. This tried and tested platform is sure to excite collectors and enthusiasts alike for its superb quality and performance capabilities.

According to media sources, the chassis will also get spool-valve dampers built by Multimatic, while stopping power will come from Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes and calipers. Just like the track-focused LT1, the Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 will shave off as much weight as possible to achieve a much higher power to weight ratio.

As for the engine, sources say that the Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 may feature a reworked version of the LT6 engine from the Corvette Z06 making 650hp. Do note that all this is just speculation and Chevrolet is yet to confirm any details about the final edition of the powertrain, so take what we say with a grain of salt.

On top of that, while we are sad to see the Camaro, as we know it, go, Chevrolet executives have stated that the Camaro’s story is not yet over. I have already written about this but still, for now we do not know whether the Camaro could be reborn as an electric vehicle (EV) or not, but it is certainly likely.

After all, with the Ford Mustang already including the Mach E EV SUV variant which will definitely replace the sports coupe version when it goes out of production after 2029 and Dodge unveiling the Charger Banshee EV (which is aptly named considering it will pump out fake engine noises), surely the Chevrolet Camaro is next.

Well, of course the Banshee is no Dodge Charger Demon and the Mustang Mach E is no Shelby Super Snake, at least these EVs keep the legacy of the cars we love alive. Whether this is the way to go about it or not is up to you but it is the most sustainable way to keep the Chevrolet Camaro name alive as well… kind of.
