A troubling incident in a Bentong secondary school has sparked public outrage following allegations of extreme corporal punishment administered to a student for wearing the wrong school uniform. The case has stirred debates around school discipline standards and the use of physical punishment in educational institutions.
The student, reportedly from SMJK Chi Wen in Bentong, was said to have been caned in front of other students after showing up in attire that did not comply with the school’s dress code. The punishment allegedly left the student with significant bruising and swelling, as shown in several widely circulated photographs. The injuries were reported to be so severe that the student is now unable to sit or lie down without pain.
The student’s mother has come forward to report the incident and has revealed that a police report has been lodged. Describing the punishment as extreme and disproportionate, she questioned the necessity of such measures for a uniform-related issue. The mother’s account includes details of her child being caned publicly, which she believes inflicted not only physical harm but emotional distress as well.
Visual evidence accompanying her account displays large, discoloured bruises on the student's lower back and legs, further fuelling public concern. The pictures suggest that the caning was delivered with considerable force, prompting widespread calls for accountability.
Political figures have not remained silent. Pahang DAP chairman Lee Chin Chen acknowledged the incident and confirmed that his office is closely monitoring the situation. He stressed that any form of violence within the school environment, including harsh corporal punishment, is unacceptable and must be addressed appropriately. According to him, if investigations reveal intentional harm, further actions by the relevant authorities would be recommended.
The incident has reignited discussions on the limits of disciplinary authority within schools, with many urging the Ministry of Education to introduce stricter guidelines and training for school personnel. There is growing pressure on the authorities to ensure that student safety is prioritized and that punitive actions are handled with care and professionalism.
