- NHS England is rolling out the National Paediatric Early Warning System (Pews) to emergency departments across England for the first time this winter.
- The standardised scoring tool measures vital signs such as heart rate, blood pressure and breathing to help staff quickly spot deteriorating health in children.
- Concerns raised by parents, carers, or children can still trigger an immediate escalation of care even if a child has a low Pews score.
- The system is designed to support rapid decision-making in emergency departments, which see more than six million children attend every year.
- Health leaders from the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health and the Royal College of Nursing welcomed the scheme, which has already helped reduce cardiac arrest rates on inpatient wards.
