Children injured after school bus strikes Newport railway bridge

Three children have been taken to hospital after a school bus crashed into a railway bridge, police have said.

Emergency services responded to a collision involving a school bus and a railway bridge in Tregare Street, Newport, at about 7.45pm on Tuesday.

Footage circulated on social media shows the double-decker bus’s roof has been ripped off, with a cordon around the railway bridge in place.

Gwent Police say three children were injured in the crash and have been taken to hospital for medical treatment. The road was closed for several hours until police officers lifted the cordon after 11am.

A spokesperson for Gwent Police said: “We received a report of a road traffic collision in Tregare Street, Newport, at around 7.45am on Tuesday 20 October.

“Officers attended along with crews from South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and the Welsh Ambulance Service and the collision involved a school bus and a railway bridge.

“Three children have sustained injuries and will be attending hospital for treatment; their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

“The road is currently closed and diversions are currently in place.”

Trains in the area were cancelled, but the line has since reopened. Cross Country Trains, however, warned some services may still be cancelled or delayed.

A Newport City Council spokesperson said: “We are working closely with emergency service colleagues. Our priority at this time is ensuring the wellbeing of those involved in the collision”.
