China ‘deeply distressed’ by US-Iran war and demands peace talks

  • Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed deep distress over the two-month conflict between the United States and Iran, calling for a comprehensive ceasefire and a return to dialogue.
  • Wang Yi's comments followed a meeting in Beijing with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, whose visit marks his first to the Chinese capital since hostilities began on 28 February.
  • The conflict has seen Iran effectively close the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping lane, causing fuel prices to surge and impacting the global economy.
  • US President Donald Trump announced a pause in American efforts to guide stranded commercial vessels out of the Strait of Hormuz, hoping to finalise a deal with Tehran.
  • This pause was made at the request of Pakistan and other countries, including Saudi Arabia, which are mediating peace talks between the US and Iran.
