China executes gaming executive for billionaire’s murder after Netflix deal dispute

  • A former gaming company executive, Xu Yao, has been executed in China for the murder of his billionaire associate, Lin Qi, the founder of Yoozoo Game.
  • Xu Yao poisoned Lin Qi in December 2020, resulting in Lin's death on Christmas Day, following a dispute over Xu being sidelined from business operations.
  • Xu was sentenced to death in 2024 after being convicted of Lin's murder, with his execution confirmed by Yoozoo on 21 May.
  • Lin Qi's company, Yoozoo, owned the film rights to The Three-Body Problem science-fiction trilogy, and Lin was an executive producer on its Netflix adaptation.
  • The conflict stemmed from Lin appointing Xu to lead the Three-Body Universe in 2018 but later reassigning key business operations to other executives, despite Xu's involvement in securing the Netflix deal.
