China has expelled several high-ranking delegates from the National People's Congress (NPC), the country's parliament and supreme body of state power comprising nearly 3,000 delegates.

Among the 13 officials affected were six military generals, including Xu Xueqiang, the NPC said on Saturday.

Xu was responsible for equipment development within the Central Military Commission (CMC), the powerful body that commands the army.

The announcement did not specify the reasons for the dismissals from the unelected parliament.

According to official figures, the NPC now has 2,858 delegates. In February, shortly before its annual session, the legislative also expelled several military officials.

For several years, President Xi Jinping, who also heads the CMC, has been pursuing an anti-corruption campaign targeting many high-ranking military generals.

Prominent cases included investigations against the commission's two vice-chairmen, Zhang Youxia and He Weidong.

Of the original seven members, only Xi and the head of the disciplinary committee, Zhang Shengmin, remain on the commission.

According to the NPC, high-ranking party delegate Ma Xingrui was also dismissed. Ma belongs to the Politburo, the inner circle of leadership within the Chinese Communist Party.

Beijing had already made public an ongoing investigation against Ma. There were signs that the official might be in trouble as early as the end of last year, when he missed important meetings and official appointments.

In July 2025, Ma lost his post as party chief in the western Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region. He was to be given a new assignment, it was said at the time, without giving further reasons for the decision.

The trained engineer was considered a rising political star and was also rumoured to have close ties to China's defence and aerospace industries.
