China calls for calm and a ceasefire as clashes escalate between Afghanistan and Pakistan, offering mediation to ease tensions.
BEIJING: China has called for an immediate ceasefire between Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning expressed deep concern over the escalating border conflict.
She urged both sides to remain calm and exercise restraint to avoid further bloodshed. China is communicating with both nations through diplomatic channels to mediate the situation.
The call follows Pakistan’s airstrikes on Afghan cities, including Kabul, on Friday. This operation was a response to an Afghan attack on Pakistani border troops the previous night.
Pakistan’s defence minister has declared the neighbours are in a state of “open war”. The clashes mark a significant escalation in long-standing border tensions.
China maintains close partnerships with both countries. It is a major investor in Pakistan through Belt and Road infrastructure projects.
Beijing has also developed a crucial relationship with the Taliban authorities in Afghanistan since 2021. Mao stated China is willing to play a constructive role in easing tensions.
The foreign ministry and Chinese embassies are actively working with relevant parties in both nations. China has requested assurances for the safety of its citizens, projects, and institutions in the region.
Beijing is closely monitoring the situation and stands ready to provide necessary assistance. The government is committed to ensuring the security of Chinese nationals in the conflict zone.
