CHINESE firm Shanghai Launch Automotive Technology wants to produce electric vehicles (EVs) in the Philippines, including the development of a local brand, the Department of Trade and Industry said on Thursday.
The company, also known as Launch Design, is one of China’s earliest and largest independent automotive research and development (R&D) organizations. Founded in 2000, it provides comprehensive turnkey design and engineering services to auto makers worldwide.
It has delivered over 400 vehicle models in partnerships with BYD, Geely, and Toyota, DTI said.
The firm’s chairman Wang Xun, in a meeting with Trade Secretary Cristina Roque in Shanghai on May 23, discussed local assembly and establishing a supply chain of EVs in the Philippines using Shanghai Launch’s design, engineering, and small-scale manufacturing, DTI said.
The firm presented its comprehensive vehicle development capabilities — from concept and design to rigorous testing and mass production.
The meeting ended with both parties agreeing to explore local production, strengthening industry linkages, and addressing the surging demand for EVs in the Philippines.
