A 24-year-old Chinese influencer known for challenging traditional superstitions and exploring allegedly haunted places has died following a serious road accident, sparking a wave of discussion online.

Known as “Jiang Xiaorou Ya” (姜小柔吖), the influencer reportedly had more than 1 million followers and built her following through videos challenging what she described as superstitious beliefs.

Some of her stunts, however, were particularly extreme

She had filmed herself smashing a Guanyin statue, nailing a paper containing her birth details to a tree, spending nights alone in abandoned properties, and performing rituals associated with traditional ghost folklore.

In one controversial video, she reportedly even challenged the idea of “karma” by burning incense and saying that she would “get into a car accident tomorrow.”

Then, tragedy struck

On 15 July, Jiang was reportedly travelling by car from Liuzhou, Guangxi, to Guangzhou when it was involved in a serious accident in Zhaoqing.

She suffered severe traumatic brain injuries, haemorrhagic shock, and multiple organ failure. Despite being treated in an ICU for nearly a month, she breathed her last on 10 August, according to ST Headline and Hong Kong 01.

She succumbed to her injuries after 28 days of treatment.

Her social media content mainly focused on filming paranormal adventures and anti-superstition themes. According to another Chinese news portal, her last video, released on 9 July, showed her calling a phone number that reportedly belonged to someone who had died in a road accident.

The call was said to be connected, but she only heard her own voice echoing back.

However, there is no verified evidence linking her death to superstition or supernatural forces.

Amid the growing speculation, Jiang’s family confirmed her death and appealed to the public on 11 August, asking the public to stop excessive speculation and respect the deceased.
