A dispute between siblings in China over their family company’s equity led the brother to hide the location of their father’s burial since his passing.

According to China Press, Chen Zhong kept the burial site a secret for four years, preventing his sisters and other family members from paying their respects.

Their father’s ashes were in his possession

The incident happened following a dispute between the two siblings, Zhong and Mei, over the equity of a company they co-founded in 2016, according to Sanxiang Metropolis Daily.

After their father passed away, Zhong failed to inform his sisters, Mei and Lan, in time and deliberately kept the burial location a secret, preventing them from attending the funeral or paying their last respects.

Their father had died in 2021 due to illness, but his ashes remained solely in Zhong’s possession, without the knowledge of his sisters.

His sisters filed a lawsuit against him

After many unsuccessful attempts to convince their brother to reveal the location of their father’s burial, the two sisters took legal action by suing him for withholding the information and demanding compensation for emotional distress.

The court ruled in the sisters’ favour, ordering Zhong to pay 10,000 yuan (RM5,932) in damages to Mei and Lan and to disclose the location of their father’s ashes and actual burial site.

Unhappy with the decision, Chen Zhong filed an appeal, but the court later rejected it and upheld the original ruling.
