With 2023 Chinese New Year just round the corner, many shops are abuzz selling all kinds of decorations, goodies and cookies. It is a tradition for the Chinese to exchange gifts like Mandarin oranges, dried meat, goodies and cookies during this season. All kinds of cookies are also served to guests who go visiting from house to house. As such, I feel that during this season, we tend to have an overdose of fantastic food. Sometimes, the cookies are in such abundance and we do not really appreciate them as much.

As a person who is passionate about baking and cooking, I have decided to make these goodies as and when throughout the year as treats for family and friends. I believe we can appreciate and enjoy them more then. One of our recent favourite finger food is Bacon Wrapped Sausage Bites. This is a good savory treat to serve as it is quick and easy to prepare. Moreover, you will only need an oven toaster or a small air fryer to get it done.

Ingredients that you need:

  • 1 pack Vienna sausages from Ikea (cut each sausage into 4 segments)
  • 1 pack streaky smoked bacon (cut each piece into 2)
  • 2 tablespoons  Black Pepper sauce
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1 Japanese cucumber 9sliced 0.5cm thick)
  • Some toothpicks.

* I mentioned sausages from Ikea as I find their texture better for this recipe.

Instructions:

1. Prepare the glaze by mixing the Black Pepper sauce and the sugar. Stir well till sugar melts.

2. Wrap a segment of the sausage with the bacon. Place the rolled up sausage (with the open end facing down) onto a lined baking tray.

3. Bake at 200 degrees Celcius for 15 minutes. Brush the glaze over each piece of sausage roll and return them to the oven for another 5 minutes to let the glaze caramelize a little.

4. Remove from the oven. Use a toothpick to poke through a slice of cucumber and sausage bacon bite. Serve.

Do give this recipe a try and share your comments. You can even prepare lots of this ahead, bake them for 15 minutes and store them in your fridge. When your guests arrive, just brush on the glaze and reheat for five minutes before you assemble them.

I am sure your guests will enjoy this savory treat when they come visiting.

Happy baking and cooking as you prepare for this Chinese New Year!
