Recently, it was announced that the Federal Government has approved an allocation of more than RM20 million for 63 Chinese private schools across Malaysia this year.
According to a report by Sinar Harian, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim shared that, of the total, RM19.84 million will be split between 62 Chinese private schools nationwide while RM1 million will be provided to Jit Sin Independent High School in Bukit Mertajam, Penang.
He further added that this allocation is a sign of the government’s appreciation for the services provided by Chinese private schools in Malaysia.
“We appreciate their loyalty in adapting to the curriculum by respecting the national language and uplifting the dignity of the people as a whole,” he said during a visit to Jit Sin Independent High School on Saturday (January 11).
Netizens were not happy about the allocation
However, many took to social media to share their belief that the money would be more useful should it go to other schools.
“It says so in the name, ‘private’, why do they need the government’s help?”
“(These are) profits (for Chinese private schools). Helping them is prioritised rather than helping schools in Sabah and Sarawak.”
“Schools in Sabah, Sarawak and rural areas are nicely being overlooked. Chinese private schools are getting (funding) until they can vomit.”
Alternatively, some pointed out that national schools and religious schools may very well be receiving funding as well, it’s just not being highlighted on social media.
“Why are you bringing up this issue? If you want to discuss about school funding, list out (the funding for) all schools. Don’t try to provoke (netizens).”
According to Budget 2025, RM1 billion will be allocated for the maintenance of all types of schools, especially for the dilapidated conditions of national schools, religious schools, special education schools, schools in military camps, and Chinese and Tamil national schools.
On top of that, another RM1 billion will be provided for the upgrading process of 543 schools, mainly in Sabah and Sarawak, as well as for the construction of 44 new schools.
