KOTA KINABALU: A 25-year-old Chinese national drowned while diving around Mamutik Island here at 2.20pm on Saturday.

The victim was among a group of seven, including a diving instructor. It is understood that everyone else had returned to the beach except for him.

According to city police chief ACP Kasim Muda, two staff eventually found the victim and proceeded to administer CPR.

"The victim was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 4.10pm.

"However, an autopsy will be carried out to identify the cause of death," he said.

Investigations are still ongoing, and the case is classified as a sudden death report.
