Chinese tourists spend about RM7,000 on average during their visit to Malaysia, according to Local Government Development Minister Nga Kor Ming.

He shared that this spending includes accommodation, food, shopping, transportation and entertainment — making Chinese tourists one of the highest-spending groups in the country.

Based on feedback from Chinese Embassy

Nga cited information provided by the Chinese Embassy in Malaysia, saying the figure was based on their internal findings.

He made the statement during the launch of the I Lite U project at Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur, on Oct 29.

According to Tourism Malaysia, nearly 1.44 million tourists from China visited Malaysia within the first four months of 2025.

He added that the number is expected to increase significantly, especially with efforts to improve facilities and promote urban tourism.

Nga also noted that Chinese tourists now enjoy 30-day visa-free entry to Malaysia, a move that officially took effect earlier this year.

He said this policy has already helped attract more visitors from China and boosted spending in the local economy.

Although his portfolio does not cover tourism, Nga highlighted that good city planning and public infrastructure are important for tourism success.

He said that efforts such as the I Lite U project will enhance public safety and urban appeal, helping Malaysia prepare for Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
