A case recently blew up on social media in mainland China where a woman (Li) installed a surveillance camera in the house where her husband was living with his mistress, then posted the footage online, as reported by the South China Morning Post.

In August 2023, the mistress (Wang) found a hidden camera that Li and her siblings had set up in the rented apartment where she was living with Li’s husband (Hu).

The mistress ended up suing her for invading her privacy

Wang found out that their intimate moments had been caught on camera, and the footage was saved on a memory card.

Over the next few months, Li kept posting Wang’s pictures and videos on social media.

Wang ended up suing Li and her siblings, demanding they stop invading her privacy and ruining her reputation by sharing her pictures and videos without permission.

Wang also demanded that they take down all the posts, photos, and videos of her, issue a public apology, and pay compensation for the emotional distress and legal costs she had to deal with.

The wife feels her actions weren’t wrong

Li argued that since her husband rented the house, she had the right to install a camera as his wife to protect their child.

She said she shared the videos online to expose his cheating and didn’t think she did anything wrong.

The Teng County Court ruled that Li had crossed the line and violated Wang’s rights.

Even though Li claimed she was just trying to protect herself, the court said she went too far and told her to take down everything she posted about Wang.

But since there wasn’t enough proof that Wang went through serious emotional harm, the court didn’t go along with her request for an apology or compensation.
