In every company, Key Performance Indicators (KPI) are usually set in place to measure how well an individual or team is performing at work, which would then determine whether they’d enjoy an increment.
A company in China took things a bit too far by making one of its employees do hundreds of squats, which left her not only unable to walk, but with a serious medical condition as well.
Punished with squats
According to China Press, the woman surnamed Yang joined a loan assistance company in Hangzhou in June of this year.
Unfortunately, she fell out of her boss’ good graces when she failed to hit her work target and was made to do 200 squats, all of which were recorded by Yang herself.
When Yang was done with the squats, she found herself unable to walk properly and discovered that her urine had turned dark, prompting her to seek treatment.
Doctors later diagnosed her with rhabdomyolysis, a severe medical condition where muscle tissue breaks down rapidly and releases harmful proteins and electrolytes into the bloodstream.
She is currently seeking RMB15,000 (approx. RM8,900) in compensation for personal injury, including 75 days of medical treatment, nursing care and nutritional support.
‘I didn’t expect it to end up like this!’
When interviewed by reporters, Yang’s boss said he studied human resources and admitted that he was aware such punishments were against labour laws.
However, he defended his actions by arguing that some level of pressure must be applied on employees as the company’s goal was to make money.
Yang’s boss also claimed that he never expected 200 squats would lead to such dire consequences and added he had been actively communicating with Yang, adding he had paid more than RMB300 (approx. RM180) in medical expenses.
An agreement on compensation has yet to be reached between the parties so far.
