Kota Kinabalu: Christmas looks set to be a wet season in view of inclement weather, so the public are advised to take safety precautions for their own good and that of their families.
Api-Api Assemblywoman Datuk Christina Liew offered the advice Friday in the wake of continuous heavy rain on Thursday, resulting in houses washed away, flash floods, landslides and the death of a woman in Papar who was killed by a falling tree.
“Holidaymakers, in particular, must pay heed to the weather warnings issued by the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) that in Sabah, alert-level continuous rain is expected in the interior, West Coast, Sandakan and Labuan until next Monday (Dec 26).
“Stay clear of the vulnerable spots such as beaches, rivers and drains to avoid any untoward incidents. Be extra cautious when going out or moving from one destination to another,” she said in a statement.
Based on feedback, Liew said civil servants returning home on Thursday shared their scary experience while travelling along Jalan Tun Fuad Stephens fronting the Tanjung Lipat area.
Lofty waves crashing onto the shoreline due to high tide, and tidal water overflowing into the main road posed hazards to motorists plying the route.
