MANILA, Philippines — Cinema ’76 Film Society and Cinema ’76 Cafe will officially close on Oct. 25 ending nearly 11 years of serving independent filmmakers, moviegoers and film enthusiasts in Metro Manila.
The announcement was made by Cinema ’76 Film Society through its social media pages, where the organization said that the closure is its “last shot” and thanked supporters who helped build the space into a community for film lovers.
“Some goodbyes are harder to write than others, and this one hits us right where it hurts. No matter how long the cameras roll, every film eventually comes to an end,” the Film Society said.
Cinema ’76 Film Society opened in San Juan City in 2016 with the goal of creating a welcoming space where microcinemas could thrive, independent filmmakers could have a venue for their work, and moviegoers could gather around their shared love for film.
The cinema later moved to Anonas before eventually settling in Tomas Morato, Quezon City, where it operated alongside Cinema ’76 Cafe.
Over the years, the venue became a familiar destination for screenings, film discussions, Q&As and meetings between filmmakers and audiences. The cafe also became part of the experience, offering food and drinks to moviegoers who spent time at the venue before or after screenings.
In its farewell message, Cinema ’76 said its supporters helped shape the space throughout its journey.
“You gave us that and so much more. You journeyed with us from San Juan to Anonas, and finally to Tomas Morato in Quezon City. You filled our iconic couches, championed cinema, and made our space feel like a second home,” it said.
The Film Society also invited moviegoers to make the most of its remaining weeks by visiting the venue before its final day.
“Consider this our warmest invitation to visit us every chance you get between now and October 25,” the organization said.
The cinema is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 3 p.m. until its final day on Oct. 25.
